MARCH 1992 NEWSLETTER

Lots of research this month and more parts of the Maurer and Brill puzzle are falling into place. We have identified several Michael Maurers, but ours eludes us still. We know why: The Lutheran Church records of Hornbach are not in Hornbach, nor are they microfilmed by the FHL. They are deposited in the Heimatstelle Pfalz (Archive of the Palatinate) which we believe is in Kaiserslautern, Germany or in Ludwigshafen, Germany. At any rate we are tracking them down. I had an idea to write to the LDS Bishop in Kaiserslautern and hire a local German member to research for us in the Central Archives. We are pursuing that line. Communication with Europe is slow and they don't answer their mail until they darn well feel like it. In the meantime back at the ranch...We continue to have plenty of work to occupy our research as we translate microfilms, inch-by-inch and find anywhere from 5-10 Brill or Maurer entries in a day's work.

As I walked into the house last week, Tedi Jeen quickly gave me the phone and I met Paul Brill. He was calling from Guernsey County, Ohio and we learned that we are cousins. We both descend from Martin Brill and Anna Maria Maurer. We had a very nice visit and he is sending me more Brill information. He lives right in the heart of Brill country, and is an avid genealogist. We had a lively and engaging discussion. He is very willing to do leg work on the Brills if we have things needing checking out in Ohio. Paul is a very nice person.

I sat down to read my genealogy mail after talking to Paul and there was a letter from a fellow I have never met or talked to before---Harry Smith from Wilmington, Deleware. He turns out to be an Amick cousin, who learned in a round about way that Amick, Brill, and Mower research is being done by us. Remember if you are related to our Michael Maurer---then you are also related (by blood) to all the Amicks, even if you come through the Almira Jane Wheeler or Lucretia Hupper lines. All of our Amicks are descendants of Michael Maurer AND Martin Brill. Anyway he wrote me a nice letter and said that he had information that Michael Amick (who married Molly Mower, daughter of Andrew) was from York County, Pennsylvania. This information, if true, will be a MAJOR breakthrough for us on the Amick line. We have looked since 1989 for the origins of John Amick, and if Michael was his brother, we may have pieced together a very important clue.

News on the Geissinger research is encouraging. As you know we believe Charles Geissinger came to America in 1766 on the ship Cullodian, landing in the fall of that year. I have located two newspaper advertizements of 1768 which are advertizing for a runaway indentured servant, Charles Geissinger, who had been serving in New Jersey. This gives us more clues and there may be indenture records of New Jersey which might list Charles' European origin.

The following are more baptismal records which Tedi Jeen and I have translated from the Zweibruecken area records. Names with no Maurer or Brill references in them are important because we know through our research that the wife's maiden name was either Maurer or Brill.
