NOVEMBER 1990
It is fall in Star Valley and the elk are out in the hay fields. The farmers however, are hunting elk in the mountains!
I have sent 100 letters this last month to Mowers listed in the Ogden and Salt Lake phone books, in an attempt to inform more of our relatives of the work we are engaged in. We have received some response. Our goal is to be able to hire the genealogist to work 1 day per month on our Mower line. He is currently working on the Maurers in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania in an attempt to find the origins of Michael Maurer (father of Andrew Mower).
In an attempt to keep us all better informed on the results of the research, I will send out with this newsletter each month, a copy of a family group sheet for one of our ancestors. In that way we should each be updated.
Secondly: Would each of you please send to me a family group sheet for your family (you and your children) and if you have one, for your parents and for your children. We will add these names to our growing computer file. Any of you who would like a computer disk with a copy of the Mower genealogy on it, please send a blank 3.5 inch disk to Shirley Wall if you have an IBM or IBM Compatible computer, or send a 3.5 inch disk to me if you have a Macintosh computer. Please send a little for postage and send the disk in a disk mailer.
Research Update: We have 2 researchers working on the Mower line in Bedford, Pennsylvania. One is a member of the Church who works at the Family History Center located there in Bedford. The other is a non-member who I have hired to work on Mowers for me in the past. I have asked them to search the issues of two Bedford County newspapers from 1800-1900 for Mowers. This may give us clues as to death dates, marriages, etc. which may prove useful to us in our research.
The information these ladies sent me this month gave us verification of several births of Amick children, identified one previously unknown Amick girl, and gave us some information on Sarah Maurer (daughter of Andrew Mower). I have also asked them if possible to locate more Church records of early Bedford County. There are very few in Salt Lake City at the FHL. They have been very good to help.
Of interest to me was the information they sent me about a Joseph Ehmik, who died in Bedford County in 1802. You will recall that John Amick named one of his sons born about that time, Joseph Amick. They also sent information about Joseph Amick and wife Mary Jane who had a daughter christened Henrietta Amick in 1837. This is new information to our family as we did not know the name of Joseph's wife, nor did we know he had children.
