MARCH 1998 NEWSLETTER
I thank the many of you who have written this month, sent research contributions, etc. We have had a good month and have found some success. In this writing I have another report from Trudy Schenk.
I am making connections however to various Brill relatives around the country. I have been able to acquire additional names of descendants of Martin Brill. This last month Nathan Mower had a very distant relative contact him via the internet. This person was referred to me and I struck up a contact with him. The result was 19 additional descendants of the Brill line. These names have been cleared and sent to Jordan River.
This month I have been asked to send names to Portland, Los Angeles, Jordan River and St. George and that has been done. Those of you attending those areas can check and see that the names are there.
I am currently working on the Charles Geissinger line and finishing up submissions from that file. We almost have that file completed. We have just completed the Martin Brill file and all those names who have qualified as descendants have been sent off.
I have several other files to clean up and then we will be back to the research efforts again full tilt. We are getting close to where I can do that again. I just have felt that we needed to stop researching and get the names to various temples and get that work done. After all, the purpose of this association is to do just that, not just collect names. We are making progress and are slowly moving toward where we want to be. I have sent Trudy sufficient money to fund another trip to Europe, but we need to check out various parishes from here before another trip.
We feel like it is just a matter of time and we are on the trail. In the mean-time, back at the ranch, we are finding success through the internet. If anyone has a copy of the book advertized on back cover page of this month's issue of Genealogical Helper I would be interested in your opinion if the book is worth buying. I have wondered if we didn't need to expand our internet abilities. The book advertized is on how to use the internet in genealogical research. I am aware of some ways to use the internet, but of course there is much to learn.
Here are some of the e-mails I have received this month:

Research update on the Briehl/Brill line:
In January I received an answer to a letter I wrote to the church at Rosenthal near Marburg where the name Briehl/Brill/Bruehl appears quite frequently. The letter contained the following information answered by Dr. Ulrich Stoehr of Bottendorf.
'In the name of Herr pastor Geisel of Rosenthal, I am anwering your letter. Ihave searched the parish records, but did not find any information on the persons in quesiton. I have the feeling that the area northwest of Marburg is where you should search. In particular, the parish Frohnhausen which includes the villages Oberasphe and Eifa. The name Briel is known there, also the given names you are searching are being used there. A new pastor is moving there in January by the name of Kopania. Please let me know if you receive a positive answer.' END
Right away I wrote a letter to Pastor Kopania at Frohnhausen, yet as I suspected he would be busy for a while after his move. He sent me an e-mail letter saying just that, but promised to search by the end of February. Now I'm anxiously awaiting his mail.
At this point I have not heard from the two individauls I wrote to in Germany who have searched the Briel name in the Marburg district.
I have not been idle and have conducted a search a few km southeast of Marburg where the church records are filmed and available at the Family History Center, when I stumbled on a marriageof an Andreas Bruehl, 20 Oct. 1701 in Nieder-Gemuenden, Oberhessen, son of Henrich Bruehl with Anna Catharina Mueller, a daughter of Anthon Mueller from Lehrbach. With two given names such as Andreas and Henrich in one family I searched further, yet found no children born in Nieder-Gemuenden. So I searched in Lehrbach where the bride is from, but found no children born here either. They could have been the parents of Martin.
Now I will hold off until I hear from pastor Kopania. I'm planning a trip to Germany in May where I hope to be able to end the Brill research. Expenses and time $140.00 on account $4175.00. Sincerely yours, Trudy Schenk

Dear Jerry,
How's everything in Star VAlley? We have snow here like
crazy. It has snowed for three days and nights now and we have about 3
feet of snow on
our roof. It is beautiful, but we are ready to have it stop.
We went to the Bountiful Temple this week and did a couple of sealings (parents) and then did sealings for 50 some females to parents and 3 males to parents. The female baptisms, inititory and endowments are finished, but there are still a lot of male inititories and endowments to do. I could use some female names for baptisms. I check on the cards before they are shredded, but someone else must be pulling them too because I do get up there and never find any in the box to send to you. I hope you are getting them from someone else. I love to get your newsletter and histories . They are wonderful. Hope all is well, I'll be sending a donation shortly.
Keep up the great work. In about 3 years (if not quicker) I will be retired and hope to do a lot more. I love the work. I've always been interested in the family histories and temple work since I was a young child. My prayers are with you for your continued success. God, bless, cousin Dorothy

Subject: Brill history
Hi Jerry,
Thanks for getting back to me. I'm not sure what I have that will help your
research, but I'd be happy to send it. I've basically been interested in
family history since a trip I took to WV eleven years ago when my
grandfather died. We went to the old Shiloh Church on Timber Ridge, and to
its very small graveyard, where some of the folks of this research are
buried. Anyway, I didn't pursue it until a couple of years ago. What I have
ranges from oral history to a very
few documents. I haven't been able to devote a lot of time to it, so every
few months I send out for records (not always successfully). I do have a
good number of local history books (which I will list for you if you want
me to copy anything from them), however there are not a lot of Brill
mentions in these.
I'll begin with my direct line: My great-grandmother, on my father's side, was Nellie Love Spaid. Nellie Spaid 1881-1963 married George Clarence Brill 1876-1957 parents of Geo.Brill were Jonathan Henry Brill 1830-1907 and Elizabeth Ann Reid 1829-1914 parents of J.H.Brill were Abraham Brill 1804-1884 and Catherine Orndorff 1809-1893 parents of Abraham Brill were Henry Brill and Elizabeth Orndorff (according to Bible record)
This is obviously just the direct Brill line, but I can send an entire chart, naming wives and their lines. Are you directly descended from any of these? I have not found anything definitive regarding Abraham Brill. Other names in my Brill line are Fry, Mentz, Bruner, and McMahon.
My great-grandmother's line also includes Brills. The parents of Nellie Spaid were John W. Spaid 1840-1907 and Margaret Brill 1839-1909 parents of Margaret Brill were Michael Brill 1804-1879 and Eleanor McKeever Michael Brill's parents may have been Henry Brill and Elizabeth Orndorff, however, I have seen other genealogists' info stating his father as Michel Brill.
On the Spaid side I am also researching the names LaFollette, Anderson, McKee, Kale, Minthorn, Swisher, Hawk, and possibly McIlwee. I'm sorry if this is disjointed, I'm not sure of the best way to format this in e-mail.
In a number of books Brill is spelled "Briel" or "Briell". This could be why some genealogists are looking for a Huguenot connection.
Anyway, I do have a few photos I can xerox for you, if you're interested.
-Abraham Brill
-Elizabeth Ann Reid
-George Clarence And Nellie Spaid Brill and with their children
-my father gave me a printed copy (on plain paper) of two photos, one
is an older man (holding a basket of eggs), and one is a group shot.
In the group shot only George and Nellie Brill are marked, but I believe
Jonathan Henry and Elizabeth Reid Brill are present.
My meager list of documents:
-birth c. of Mary L. Spaid (Nellie), Hampshire Co.
-marriage of Abraham Brill and Catherine Orndorff (names her father),
Frederick Co.
-marriage (only a listing) of John Reed (Reid) and Mary Bruner,
Frederick Co.
-death c. of Jemimiah Spaid, Hampshire Co.
-death c. of Hannah Spaid (Hannah Anderson Spaid), Hampshire Co.
(Unfortunately, Hampshire Co. has only sent me abbreviated forms, not
copies of actual doc's)
-History of Shiloh Church from "The Hampshire Review", newspaper
article, lists many names
-land deed -- JH Brill to George Brill;
-land deed -- Abraham Brill to JH Brill
(indicate some land ownership)
-Chapter 8 from Maud Pugh's book about Capon Valley (some of this is
questionable information,
but it offered me some decent leads) Contained in Chap.8 is Bible
record of Abraham Brill,
Bible record of JH Brill, some info on the Reid family, and Maud's
personal notes of many
Brill family members.
-If you have McKee connections, I have Chap.21 (McKee: Irish Family...)
from Wilmer Kerns' book "Frederick County, Virginia Settlement and Some
First Families of Back Creek Valley 1730-1830" It is informative and I
believe Mr. Kerns does his research.
Books:
-"Historical Records of Old Frederick and Hampshire Counties, VA"
Wilmer L. Kerns
-"Early Records Hampshire County, VA, now WV" Clara Sage and Laura
Jones
(synopsis of wills, grantee-grantor lists, deeds, and 1782/84 census
lists)
-"Frederick Co. VA Marriages 1771-1825" Eliza Davis
-"Hampshire Co. Death Records 1866-1922" Vicki Bidinger Horton
-"Frederick Co. Wills & Administrations 1795-1816" MN Kangas and DE
Payne
(includes wills of Henry Brill, Robert McKee,Sr.; and John Orndorff,
Sr.)
-"Northern Neck Land Grants 1742-1775" Gertrude Gray
-"Hampshire Co. Records" Vicki Bidinger Horton
-"1787 Census of VA - Hampshire Co." (tax list)
-"1787 Census of VA - Frederick Co. and Winchester town" (tax list)
I will gladly xerox anything for you, so just let me know. Also, are you researching Anderson at all? I am stumped on a Hannah Anderson, 1786-1866, married to John Spaid. Have nothing on her parents, etc.
I look forward to sharing information with you. Hope this message was easy to follow! Thanks, ~Nellie

Hi Jerry!
I don't have a genealogy file program. I know, I know, I really need to get one. I've been researching for 20 years, since I was in my teens and my gr-grandfather told me about the family history. We didn't have computers then, but I sure love em now. But, I just got used to remembering and keeping copies of info. How much better it is now. What genealogy program do you recommend?
Can I download the file you sent without a genealogy program? I really feel that my Andrew Mower b. 1804 d. 1882 Colerain Twp. md. Mary A. States (Miller?) b. 1812 d. 1884 and your Mowers are the same bunch. I've connected most of the Mowers that I find Colerain Twp to my Andrew b. 1804. He could be the minor son, in 1813, of your Andrew Mower. My Andrew would have been 9 years old at the time OR he could be the son of either your John Michael d. 1829 or the son one of John Michaels brothers.
I will make copies of Andrew Mower (Maurer) d. 1813, Colerain Twp. probate records (court records name Andrew, a minor son of Andrew Mower, who choses Jacob Bealor as his guardian, court approved Nov. 5, 1813.) Also pertaining to Andrew d. 1813 - court records dated April, 1823 - A motion at instance of Jacob Mower (do you know who this is?) `and Michael Emich citation awarded against Michael Mower and Michael Emich executors of last will and testament of Andrew Mower. I'll have to look into this more!
Michael Mower (your John Michael) d. 1829, Colerain Twp. probate records (names Administrators Samuel and John Bussard, and David Exline.) Surname that are associate with the probate records of both Sophia d. 1859 and Michael d. 1829 as the deceased owed money to them, or they bourght items from the estate, etc. were: Charles Pensly, Elias Gump, Solomon Beegle, Emmanuel F. Diehl - for Sophia; AND Catherine Pensly, John Gump, Frederick Beegle, Adam & Solomon Diehl - Michael
Sophia Mower d. 1859 records, Colerain Twp. (George Mower and Emmanuel F. Diehl - administrators) She owed quite a sum of $ for wood purchased from John May from Oct, 1832 to Nov, 1854
John Mower d. 1883 records - names John Cessna exec. Daughters Georgiana E. Mower and Mary Emma Mower, and grandau. Anna M. Mower (her mother ??? is to hold the money for the minor until she is of age)
I'll be glad to send you copies of the pictures. I still want to find John Michael Mower and Andrew Mower (Maurer) graves, if they exist. They may be unmarked at the old churchyard I spoke of earlier, just outside Charlesville, Double Brick Church. Many gravestones are as old as the Mowers, but there appears to be unmarked graves also. So long, Eilene

Jerry,
Don't recall if I replied to your request for e-mail addresses. I don't
have much, and the Mowrers I am writing in and out of Wayne Co. mainly
don't have e-mail. The few who do aren't in Wayne Co. Did I ask you which
Samuel Mowrer you want to know about? What time period, and which county
did he go to? My Maurer correspondence is so wide-ranging, both e-mail and
snail mail, that I sometimes get confused about who I have answered and who
I haven't. Samuel is a good Maurer name for both my branch (Christian
Maurer, born 1774-75) and the Michael Maurer/Mowrer/Mowry branch -- both
branches were in Wayne Co. So there were more than a few Samuel
Maurer/Mowrers running around Wayne Co. by the 1820s and 1840s. I think my
Samuel Maurer/Mowrer, son of Christian, came to Wayne Co., Ohio from what
is now Snyder Co., Pa. about 1827-28. Samuel came to OHio with a brother or
two and some sisters, following the lead, I think, of Johannes (John)
Maurer, their older brother, and my direct ancestor. And
Johannes was himself following the lead, I think, of his wife's parents,
who had come to Wayne Co. about 1819. Johannes' wife was Elisabeth Bär,
daughter of Adam Bär and Susanna/Sousanna Lohmiller/Lohmuller, of what is
now Snyder Co. Johannes and Elisabeth married in 1818 in what is now Snyder
Co. And Michael Maurer/Mowrer came to Wayne Co. even earlier, as early as
1812 or 1814. And even he wasn't the earliest Maurer in Wayne Co.; another
one, John, born in Va. or West Va., I think, was there before Michael
Maurer, I
think. Michael Mowrer On a beautiful Friday afternoon in Heidelberg, Germany

Thanks for writing. We wanted to share the results of the research with Mower family members, but are not thinking of publishing it in book form. If you want to make a short quote from some of our material, just clear it through us and credit us for the material. If you want larger amounts of our research to publish, then write us about that specifically.
I would like to link up with someone in Wayne Co., Ohio of the Mower, Mowrer, etc. line as I am still looking for Samuel MAURER who I believe went to Ohio. Do you have any e-mail addresses for any of those people? Thanks for writing and it is nice to hear from you. Let me know if you have any Wayne co., researchers. Thanks, Jerry

Hello Jerry!
I would think that they are related. Mowers, same place at the same time. My Andrew Mower b. 1804 d. 1882 md Mary A. Miller (or States) b. 1812 d. 1884 appears to fit into the time frame & age to be your ancestors brother, cousin. Do you know the names of your ancestors brothers? There were NOT a lot of Mowers in Bedford Co., I'm sure they connect. Help me figure it out, PLEASE. I got copies of all of the Mower wills from the Bedford courthouse. I checked out some other graveyards in the Colerain Twp. area, Charlesville and Rainsburg. Double Brick Church has a graveyard that has many Rev War soldiers and deaths that date into the late 1700's. I found my 4th great grandfathers sister, a Holler who md. a Beegle (Rev War) buried there, lots of others, too. Perhaps some of our Mowers are buried there, many unmarked graves. I took a lot of pictures. Were your Mowers from Charlesville? My Andrew Mower is buried at Rainsburg, about a mile or two from Charlesville. Let me know if you would like copies of the wills and if you know the names of the brothers of your Bedford Co. Mower ancestors. Thanks, Eilene

Mike,
I don't know about a connection in the ADAMS family, but I am 4th cousin of your father in the AMICK family. I have his name and line back to John AMICK who was our common ancestor. A lot of the early generations of the AMICK family I got from Jerry MOWER whom I am sending a copy of this email.
How far back do you have the AMICK family? I have quite a lot of data and will send a GEDCOM by separate email (so that it doesn't go to Jerry again). Also, the HOOVER/ADAMS data I mentioned before.
I use PAF 2.31 and would like a GEDCOM of your whole database if you are willing to send me a copy. Duke Clark

Dear Duke, Thanks for the information. We are definitely talking about the same family here. Albert Vaughn Sparks, b. 6 June 1919 is my 1st Cousin twice removed. I'm also 4th Cousin once removed of the wife. I'll try to show you how this fits together:
1---George Washington Amick, b. 8 Oct 1837
+Jennie Elizabeth Sparks, b. 16 June 1844
2---Dora Hannah Belle Amick, b. 14 Nov 1881
+John Sherman Sparks, b. 14 April 1878
3---Albert Vaughn Sparks, b. 6 June 1919
2---Ralph Lurene Amick, b. 19 Sept 1870
+Sarah Ella Swartz, b. 31 Jan 1878
3---Florence E. Amick, b. 3 Feb 1904
+Michael Thomas Savoy, b. 4 July 1896
4---Michael Thomas Savoy, Jr., b. 22 July 1923
+Betty Jane Germroth, b. 10 Feb 1927
5---Michael Robert Savoy (me), b. 24 Sept 1947
+Patricia Ann Harknett, b. 7 June 1948
That's it in a nutshell. I have lots of info to share if you would like.
I use Family Tree Maker 3.4 Software, and can send .FTW files or GED.COM if
you prefer.
As far as the additional information that you have, I would love to have
all the people on your database that are related to me, however distant.
Are we related? I couldn't quite tell since I can't find the link to your
Adams ancestors yet. Let's find out where our data overlaps, and go from
there. Best Regards,

Hi Jerry,
I sent a note to you in regard to the book by Ray Brill - "Brill Families in
America and their Allied Families".
Well, I got in touch with Ray and ordered the book. This is an awesome
find.
I have found a large discrepancy in my line in this book. I do not want to
send in any corrections until I have it absolutely right. I believe we
talked in the past and exchanged gedcom files - probably about one year
ago.
My line of Brill descendent is as follows:
Christopher Brill
George Brill 1776
George Brill Jr b. 1810-1812
Francis Marion Brill 1838
Edward Quincy Brill 1878
Charles Edward Brill *- 1919 my paternal grandfather
I have been stuck on George Brill Jr's father for so long and cannot straighten it out. Can not find any documented proof who his father was. I believe his father was George from published county histories and stories. I need to get the United Brethren Church records for Salesville Ohio but have been unable to locate them - I believe this would answer my question - for George and George Sr were instrumental in building this church.
Back to the book - on page 435 Children of John Brill is listed a son named George P. Brill he married Mary Ann Lingenfelder their seven children: Sophia, Francis Marion, Emmanuel, Madison, Nelson, Samantha, and Mary E.
on page 478 Children of George Brill is listed a son named George J. Brill he married Mary A. ______ their seven children: Sophia, Francis Marion, Manuel, Madison, Nelson, Samantha, Mary E.
Alot of this problem has stemmed for the census his being listed as George J
and on marriage recording listed as George P - do you have any suggestions
as to where else I can turn?
George Jr was born around 1810-1812.
