Dear Jerry,
The goal of this research session was to learn more about Susanna Hansdotter and her parents. Information from your PAF file showed that Susanna was married about 1757 to an unknown man and had a daughter named Stina. I located the birth record of Christina who was born February 4, 1758 in Snuggan, Lindesberg, Örebro, Sweden as an illegitimate daughter of Susanna Hansdotter. The 1757-1764 Lindesberg Clerical Survey shows Susanna living in Snuggan, but does not show Christina until Susanna is in the household of Per Persson in Limnas. During this clerical survey Susanna becomes the wife of Per Persson and Stina is shown as the daughter of Per's wife. I searched for the probate record of Per Persson hoping that it would shed light on the identity of Stina's father but found no record.
Since Susanna wasn't listed in the Limnas and Hafstad portion of the 1775-1785 Lindesberg Clerical Survey following Per Persson's death, I followed some of Susanna's children in an effort to locate her. Her son Jan or Johan married Lisa Jansdotter on December 26, 1789 in Arboga Stad, Västmanland. I searched the Lindesberg Moving Out records for Susanna and her children but they are missing several years worth of records. Since these moving records reference clerical survey pages, I checked the corresponding pages listed to determine if any of them were the correct people and found her daughter Brita living in Lindesberg City with Susanna and her new husband Lars Ljung. Susanna married Lars on December 29, 1774 in Lindesberg. Lars was a resident of the city and Susanna a resident of Limnas. They had a son Petter Ljung who was born March 25, 1777 and died November 24, 1783. Susanna died June 25, 1782 in Lindesberg City at the age of 46. This record states that she was born 1736 in Ljusnarsberg and had one son and one daughter living. This may mean that Christina was deceased by this time, but we do know that both Petter and Jan were still living at Susanna's death so the information on her daughters may be incorrect as well.
Susanna's daughter Brita married Anders Bäckström in Lindesberg on October 19, 1783 and resided with him in Vedevåg, Örebro. Anders was a master smith and died on June 3, 1801. A Swedish internet forum says that Brita died in 1837 but does not give a location. This record still needs to be located.
Since all of the records to this point stated that Susanna was born in Ljusnarsberg in 1736, I searched the Ljusnarsberg births but found no Susanna born in 1736 and no Susanna born to a Hans from 1721 to 1740 in this parish. I also searched the Lindesberg births from 1734 to 1738 but found no record of Susanna Hansdotter, so I searched the 1757-1764 Lindesberg Clerical Survey for Susanna in Snuggan where Christina was born. Besides the listing in the household of Per Hindersson, I found a few pages away a Susanna who was also married in 1760. No surname, birth year, or birth place was provided, but she is shown as the daughter of Carin Thomasdotter, born 1700 in N. Kopparberg. I double checked the 1760 Lindesberg marriages and no other Susanna was married in this year. The name Susanna is actually rather uncommon in this area and time period. I searched the 1748-1756 Lindesberg Clerical Survey for Snuggan and Limnas and found Carin Thomasdotter in Snuggan. The 1765-1775 Lindesberg Clerical Survey for Snuggan also showed Karin Thomasdotter and that she was moving to Limnas. I was unable to locate Karin in Limnas for this clerical survey or the 1775 to 1784 survey, nor was she in this parish's deaths through 1779, though no death records are available for 1758 to 1773. We can search the deaths a little later on the chance that she may be listed.
I searched the Ljusnarsberg marriages from 1720 to 1738 but found no marriage for Carin Thomasdotter. The best match for her place of birth as shown in the clerical surveys is Nya Kopparberg, but this is a civil district rather than a parish and covers the parish of Ljusnarsberg. I searched the 1700 Ljusnarsberg births but did not locate a Carin Thomasdotter. I also searched the Ljusnarsberg 1748-1753 Clerical Survey, but found no record of Carin Thomasdotter or Susanna Hansdotter.
At this point I returned to the Lindesberg Clerical Surveys. I searched the 1748-1756 survey and found several matches for Susanna Hansdotter. In 1749 she was in Jönshyttan and states that she was born in 1736 in Kysboda or similar. In 1751 she was in Ingelshyttan and states that she was born in 1736 in Kerbergat or similar. By 1752 and 1754 she was in Lindesberg City, 6th Roten and was shown as born in 1736 Kirbarant or similar. A likely match in Lindesberg City, 3rd Roten shows a Susanna from 1756 to 1758 born in Ramsberg in 1734. The Lindesberg movings from 1752 to 1755 show that in August of 1754 she left the city for Fellingsbro. The Fellingsbro Clerical Survey of 1746 to 1761 has Susanna in Feninge from 1754 to 1756. It provides both 1736 and 1738 as her birth year but does not give a place.
Ramsberg parish has a small place named Karberget, so I searched Ramsberg births from 1734 to 1738 but found no Susanna. Fundbo parish in Uppsala contains a small place named Karberga, but Susanna was not in these births in 1736 either. I also searched for Susanna in the Ramundeboda births from 1736 to 1738, the Fellingsbro births from 1734 to 1739, and the Ervalla births from 1734 to 1738. We should continue to search the births in the parishes surrounding Lindesberg for Susanna's birth.
I searched the 1722 - ? Ljusnarsberg Clerical Survey for Carin Thomasdotter since all information indicates that she was from this area. I found a few Carin Thomasdotter's but this survey does not provide the year of birth, making it difficult to positively identify her. I then searched for these Carin's in the 1708-1722 clerical survey and found two of them listed. 1) Karin Thomasdotter of Nybygge was the daughter of Thomas Andersson and his wife Karin. I searched the Ljusnarsberg births from 1698 to 1703 for any children born to a Thomas and found only one -- a son Erich born to Thomas Andersson in Nybygge on May 22, 1701. 2) Karin Thomasdotter of Stor Kumblan, daughter of Tomas Tomsson married during the 1722 - ? survey. Tomas Tomsson was the son of Tomas Gioransson of Stor Kumblan. It appears that the family also lived in Lilla Smeberg in the 1722 - ? survey. I suspect that the other Karin's located in this survey may be other residences for these two women. I have already searched the Ljusnarsberg marriages for the time period that the second Karin would have married, but we can check additional birth and marriage years in this and surrounding parishes to locate her. The name of Thomas is unusual in this area so there aren't many occurrences of the name Carin Thomasdotter. It is purely supposition at this point, but it is possible that Carin was widowed young, leaving her to support a young daughter however she could. It looks as though they moved frequently and Susanna may not have been sure where she was born. I doubt they would have traveled far from the Lindesberg and Ljusnarsberg area because circumstances likely left them to travel by foot.
If you wish to pursue Susanna's daughter Christina further, we will need to search Lindesberg marriages and deaths for her. This will be complicated by the fact that we do not know what surname she was using, but hopefully we will be able to identify her through other means.
Sincerely,
Susan Glenn, AG
